
Daytona State women shut out Southern Union
The Daytona State College women's soccer team defeated Southern Union in the semifinals of the Southeast District Championships Friday morning at Orlando Health Stadium.
The Falcons, who are the No. 1 seed in the championships, advanced to the final on Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
On Friday the Falcons got on the board early as Alejandro Espinosa hit a nice corner kick that Sophia Varga finished in the eighth minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead.
Daytona State College had chances to pull away but Southern Union goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith made a couple of outstanding saves on 1-on-1 opportunites to keep the Bison in the contest.
It would remain 1-0 at halftime but Daytona State College would put the game away in the 67th minute when Valeria Vasquez found Shaneil Buckley for her 15th goal of the season.
The Falcons who won the Region 8 title will look to win the district title and advance to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament on Saturday.
