
EFSC softball team splits doubleheader Tuesday
The Eastern Florida State College softball team split a doubleheader against Polk State College Tuesday evening at Titan Softball Complex.
The Titans won the first game 9-2 and then lost the second game 9-4. Eastern Florida State College is now 9-7 in the Citrus Conference while Polk State College is 6-10.
In Game 1, Avery Velazquez tossed her 13th complete game, allowing a two-run home run from Chelsi Rae Hebert in the sixth inning that broke up the shutout. It was the 14th win for Velazquez who recorded her 100th strikeout of the season in the first inning.
While Velazquez was putting up zeroes, the Titans offense got things going in the second inning as Martha Jones had an infield single, stole second and went to third on Kayla Fanning's infield single. Fanning would steal second and then Jessica Merk walked to load the bases.
Jones would score on an Aracelis Jimenez groundout and then Ashley Corazzini ripped a two-run double to make it 3-0.
The Titans would score four more times in the fifth inning as Ashley Grieser hit an RBI triple scoring Emma George. Then Grieser would score on a single by Fanning.
Jones would score on a Merk single and then Fanning scored on a sacrifice fly by Corazzini.
A two-run single by Merk in the sixth would make it 9-2.
Grieser went 4-for-4 in the game while Jones had three hits and Corazzini had two doubles.
In Game 2, Karyna Lewis hit a two-run single in the top of the first to take the lead. The Titans would get one back as Corazzini walked and scored on Emma George's sacrifice fly.
Eastern Florida State College would tie the game 2-2 in the third inning when Corazzini singled and scored on Avery Velazquez double.
From there, Polk State would score three in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to lead 6-2.
They would put the game out of reach when Hebert crushed a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
Madison Velazquez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 9-4.
Avery Velazquez went 2-for-2 with a double while Madison Velazquez had three hits.
Eastern Florida State College will be off until Tuesday when they will travel to Indian River State College for a Citrus Conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
