Women's volleyball team goes 2-2 at Cheyenne Invitational
The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team finished up the Springhill Suites Cheyenne Invitational 2-2 this weekend.
The No. 19 Titans lost to No. 12 New Mexico Military Institute and then No. 18 Colby Community College on Saturday at Laramie County Community College.
In the first match of the day, the Titans faced New Mexico Military and it was a battle as the teams traded points for much of the match. Eastern Florida State College fell short, 21-25, 25-17, 25-27 and 16-25.
Eastern Florida State College came out fast in the first set and took a 13-7 lead on a Lesmary Raffucci kill but New Mexico Military went on a 7-1 run to tie the match 14-14. From there it remained tight, but NMMI scored three of the final points to clinch the victory.
The second set saw the Titans make the big run as they turned an 8-8 tie into a 15-10 lead and would stay out front, posting the 25-17 win and tying the match 1-1.
It looked like New Mexico Military would cruise in the third set but down 22-15, the Titans went on a 7-1 run to cut the lead to 23-22. A block by Jordan and a huge block would tie things at 24-24. But New Mexico Military would hang on for the 27-25 win.
The Broncos would win the fourth set to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Jordan led the Titans with 14 kills while Libby Ashline finished with nine and Aliah Snider had seven.
In the second match of the day, Eastern Florida State College met Colby Community College and after winning the first set 25-16, they lost the next three sets 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22.
In the first set, the Titans jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead and led from the start, pulling away for the 25-16 win.
The second set was back and forth as nobody led by more than two points until Colby went on a 4-0 run to lead 23-19. The Titans cut it to 23-22 but could not take the lead, ultimately falling 25-23.
In the third set, things were tied 19-19 but once again it was Colby that came up with the big plays at the end, scoring six of the final eight points.
Once again the match was close throughout and was tied 19-19 before another late run by Colby.
Raffucci had 13 kills and Jordan finished with 12 kills in the match.
Eastern Florida State College (5-4) will compete in the Blazer Classic at Vincennes University next weekend before starting the conference season.
