Men's golf team tied for 10th after first round at national tournament
The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team are tied for 10th overall after the first round of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in New Mexico.
The Titans shot a 293 at Rockwind Community Links in Hobbs on Monday.
Masen McKain shot a 1-under 70 as he had birdies on No. 9 and No. 14 before a bogey on 17. Teammate Nick Miller shot a 2-over 73 with two birdies and four bogeys in the round. Bryan Hernandez finished strong with a birdie on No. 17 and then an eagle on No. 18 to finish the round 3-over 74.
Adam Vermut shot even par on the front nine but struggled on the back nine and finished 5-over 76 while Hugo Griesheimer shot a 79.
"It was a scrap all day. We got off to a tough start and held it together to shoot 293," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "We need to get off to a better start tomorrow and adjust to the elevation better with approach shots."
New Mexico Junior College leads the tournament, shooting 4-under par 280 while Midland Community College is in second, shooting even par 284.
The Titans will tee off beginning at 10:30 a.m. for round 2 on Tuesday.
