
Volleyball team to compete at Cheyenne Invitational
The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team will travel to Wyoming to compete in the Springhill Suites Cheyenne Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The 19th-ranked Titans will play three ranked teams in the invitational after defeating No. 4 Salt Lake Community College and No. 5 Trinity Valley last weekend in the FSW Battle at the Beach.
Eastern Florida State College comes into the tournament 3-2 and will open against Trinidad State College at 9 a.m. Friday. The Trojans are 4-1 this season and have won four straight after dropping the opener. Jaedyn Fuqua has recorded 56 kills in five matches this season.
The Titans will then play No. 16 Casper College at 4 p.m. Friday. Casper comes into the tournament 2-2 and has lost the past two, falling to McCook and Seward County. The Thunderbirds defeated Otero and North Platte to begin the season.
On Saturday Eastern Florida State College will begin the day at 11 a.m. against No. 12 New Mexico Military Institute who are 4-0 and have dropped just one set in the first four matches. Fuka Sekita has recorded 10.43 digs per set this season which leads NJCAA Division I players and has 73 digs in four matches which is 11th in the nation.
The Titans will wrap up the tournament against another unbeaten team, facing No. 18 Colby Community College who is also 4-0 and have not dropped a set since the season-opener against Panola. The Trojans are led by Karlotta Kattai who has recorded 64 kills in four matches which is sixth-best in the nation while Camila Canedo is tied for fifth in digs with 82.
"We are very excited about this weekend, looking forward to the opportunity to play ranked teams and putting the team in situations to face high-level competition," Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball coach Melito Eleutiza said. "The goal is to win all of the games this weekend in Wyoming and continue to do the work we have done in practice. Very excited about this trip and the challenges."
Sophomore Dominae Jordan has 43 kills while freshman Lesmary Raffucci has 41 to lead the Titans attack.
