Women's golf team set for Southeast District Championship

Women's golf team set for Southeast District Championship

Eastern Florida State College women's golf program will be hosting the Southeast District Lady's Golf Championship on Monday and Tuesday at Duran Golf Club in Viera.

The Southeast District title and a spot in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament will be on the line and the field could not be more talented.

Daytona State College is the defending national champions and ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA Division I national poll while Seminole State College is No. 3 in the national ranking and defending Southeast District champion.

The host Titans are ranked fourth in the national poll and are looking to make their fourth straight appearance into the national tournament.

Palm Beach State College is having a strong first season and are sixth in the national poll. Also competing this week is Florida Gateway College who is ranked 17th in the nation and Georgia Military College has two players competing in the field.

"Obviously the most powerful district there is," Eastern Florida State College women's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "We had the conversation, don't worry who is playing, we have to stay in our lane and play Duran the way we know how. If we look around, it will be distracting. It is going to be a good field and a good tournament, the only thing missing is more teams."

Some of the best golfers in NJCAA Division I women's golf will be playing at Duran Golf Club led by Daytona State College's Samantha Paradise and Eastern Florida State College's Mila Tang who are ranked second and third in the nation.

The top five players from Daytona State College are ranked in the top 12 in the rankings.

Tang, a freshman from Germany, has won two tournaments this spring and won her match at the UNG Bracket Challenge to finish the regular season. Teammate Ann Burel is ranked 21st and Jenna Barnett is 24th in the national rankings.

"We had a good practice, they are getting rested up and come Monday we will be fine," Howell said. "She has had a very good year, she didn't play as well as she would have liked in Georgia but handled it well. She knows her game is there, she plays a course she knows and I expect her to fare well."

The tournament will be 18 holes each day with a 10 a.m. start.

The NJCAA Division I National Tournament will be held at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Finney County, Kansas May 12-15.
