
Softball team will open conference season Wednesday on the road
The Eastern Florida State College softball team will open the Southern Conference season Wednesday on the road.
The Titans, who are 12-12 on the season, will play Indian River State College on the road. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
"We are really excited to get conference play started. We are jumping right into tough competition but I feel our girls are ready for it," Eastern Florida State College softball coach Shelby Petik said. "We are looking forward to playing some good softball."
Eastern Florida State College has won five straight games heading into the conference season. Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor and Trinity Howard have been pitching well for the Titans during the win streak as Taylor is 9-1 with a 1.25 ERA while Howard has won two straight games.
Offensively, Kayla Domon and Brooke Theisen are off to strong starts with Domon one of the top baserunners in the state with 23 stolen bases.
"We have had our leaders really step up for us early in the season," Petik said. "Trinity and Mandy have really stepped up in the circle for us and the bats have come alive this past week so we are looking for some great play and big things this week."
Indian River State College come into the conference opener 13-9 and have won three straight games. The Pioneers are hitting .331 as a team this season and has a team ERA of 3.68.
The Titans will be back at Titan Softball Complex on the Melbourne campus Saturday for a conference doubleheader against Miami Dade beginning at 1 p.m.
