Softball team sweeps Daytona State College on the road
The Eastern Florida State College softball team earned a sweep against Daytona State College Thursday evening on the road.
The Titans won the first game 7-6 and the second game 7-0.
In the first game the Titans jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Makenzie Fore and Brooke Theisen each had a sacrifice fly, scoring Kayla Domon and Molly Reid.
Then in the second inning Addi Lyle hit a two-run double, Courtney Stout had an RBI single and Domon drove in Stout to make it 6-0.
Daytona State cut the lead to 6-4 in the fourth inning but in the fifth inning the Titans got the run that would end up being the game winner. Theisen hit an infield single, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Theisen scored on an errant throw to give the Titans a 7-4 lead.
Starting pitcher Trinity Howard left the game with two on in the fifth inning and a 7-5 lead. Ariana Gonzalez came into the game and got out of the jam, allowing just one run to score.
Makenzie Fore came into the game in the sixth inning and after a leadoff double, the freshman got out of the inning with a strikeout and a flyout.
The bottom of the seventh inning started the same way with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Titans would then make a game-saving play as a sacrifice bunt to Fore who went home and Addi Lyle tagged out the runner trying to score. Fore would strike out the next hitter to end the game.
Domon finished with three hits and stole two bases.
In Game 2, Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor had another big outing for the Titans, tossing a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts.
With Hedetniemi-Taylor putting up zeroes, the Titans once again got the early lead as Fore walked and would score on Theisen's triple.
It would stay that way until the fifth inning when Domon hit a triple and then Reid would triple to score Domon.
Up 2-0 in the sixth inning the Titans would rally with two outs as Addi Lyle singled and pinch runner Jenna Malone would score on Courtney Stout's triple.
After that, Domon would be hit by a pitch and Reid walked to load the bases.
That brought up Fore with the bases loaded. Fore would unload on a pitch, hitting it to straightaway centerfield for a grand slam. It was Fore's first home run of the season and opened up the game.
From there Hedetniemi-Taylor seemed to get even better ending the game with a strikeout.
Theisen and Lyle each had three hits while Domon and Fore each had two hits.
Eastern Florida State College (5-7) will be back at Titan Softball Complex Saturday for a doubleheader against the College of Central Florida. The first game will start at 1 p.m. and the games will be shown live online on the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
