Women's soccer team shuts out Miami Dade in Region 8 Semifinal
The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team shut out Miami Dade College to advance to the FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Championship game on Sunday.
The No. 14 Titans defeated the 15th ranked Sharks 3-0 in the first semifinal at Daytona State College as freshman Victoria Pou Varona scored her first hat trick as a Titan.
Varona and the Titans did not waste much time getting on the board as Sydney Aldeghi served a nice corner kick to Lili Baidoe whose header bounced off the post and Varona was there to finish it five minutes into the match.
It would remain 1-0 throughout the first half as the Titans had chances but could not add to the lead.
Eastern Florida State College came out in the second half faster than the first as Aldeghi's corner kick went into the box and the keeper hit it but Varona was there to finish once again just a minute and 40 seconds into the second half.
Up 2-0 the Titans would strike again 10 minutes later as Aldeghi once again served a corner kick into the box and off a defender where Varona headed the ball into the back of the net.
From there the defense held Miami Dade in check to post the win and advance to the final.
The Titans will face No. 9 Daytona State College in the championship game Sunday at 7 p.m. It will be the third meeting between the teams as they split the first two meetings. Eastern Florida State College is in the championship game for the second straight season and the eighth time in Titans history. The Falcons and Titans have met for the title six times.
