The Eastern Florida State College softball team split with Indian River State College Wednesday evening at Titan Softball Complex.
The Titans lost the first game 13-4 but bounced back behind a strong pitching performance from Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor to win the second game 8-2. With the split Eastern Florida State College improved to 11-9 in the Southern Conference while Indian River State College solidified its hold on first place at 15-5.
In Game 1, the Titans trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning when their bats came alive. Kayla Domon led off with a double, then scored on Brooke Theisen's RBI single. Makenzie Fore then hit a triple that scored Theisen. Fore would then score on Molly Reid's single as the Titans took a 3-2 lead.
But Indian River State College took the lead back in the fourth inning with three runs. The Pioneers would go on to pick up the win.
Domon finished with three hits while Theisen and Fore each had two hits in the game.
Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor retired the first 10 Indian River hitters in a row before giving up a hit in the fourth inning. It would be one of four hits she would allow in the game.
While Hedetniemi-Taylor was pitching well, the offense got things going with two runs in the first inning and added another in the second inning on a Fore RBI single. Molly Reid would drive in a run with a double in the fourth and a two-run triple in the fifth inning as the Titans would pick up the 8-2 win.
Miami Dade improved to 11-9 with a sweep on Wednesday to tie the Titans for second place and set up a showdown Saturday afternoon in Miami. The first game of the doubleheader will start at noon. The Titans will host South Florida State College next Wednesday at Titan Softball Complex with Game 1 beginning at 4 p.m.
