Baseball team picks up win Wednesday in series opener on WEFS-TV
The Eastern Florida State College baseball team defeated South Florida State College Wednesday evening at Bruce Bochy Field in a game shown live on WEFS-TV.
The Titans moved into second place in the Southern Conference with the 9-6 victory in a game that saw five home runs.
Eastern Florida State College started fast, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Jason Blackstone hit a solo home run. It was Blackstone's third home run of the season.
Starting pitcher Trey Jackson was cruising through the first three innings, but the fourth inning saw two solo home runs cut the lead to 3-2.
Dalton Robinson hit a solo home run in the fifth inning as the lead went to 4-2.
South Florida State College's Brylon West hit his second home run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, once again making it a one-run game.
But the bottom of the sixth inning saw Ryne Wallace double and score on a Gabriel Cruz double. Cruz would score on Blackstone's RBI single to make it 6-3.
Trey Jackson left after six innings with seven strikeouts. Jackson Woodward came into the game and struck out the first two hitters before getting into a jam. South Florida State College would score a run and had two on with West coming to the plate. But Woodward got him looking for the strikeout to end the inning.
The bottom of the eighth inning saw Wallace and Ivan Zambrano walk, Cruz hit a nice sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Blackstone would walk to load the bases, bringing up Drew Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh would deliver with a two-run single. Jesus Santana would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning for the ninth run.
Woodward came back out for the ninth inning after getting a strikeout to start the inning, four straight singles led to two runs.
Ridge Skarbek would come into the game and got the final two outs with the bases loaded to finish off the win.
Drew Stubbs had three hits in the game.
Eastern Florida State College will travel to South Florida State College for Game 2 of the weekend series Friday. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
