Women's tennis team has solid day at Region 8 Championships

Women's tennis team has solid day at Region 8 Championships

The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis team will play for a Region 8 title in a couple of draws in the Region 8 Championships at Tejas Pradip Patel HCC Tennis Center in Tampa.

In singles, Maria Gento won her match against St. Petersburg College's Maria Moskaltsova 6-1, 6-1 to advance to Friday's final against Hillsborough Community College's Yoana Dudova.

The Titans also had two doubles teams advance to the finals as the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams picked up wins.

At No. 1 doubles the duo of Emma Sanchez and Lucia Lucas lost the first set 7-5 and then came back and won the next two, 6-4 and 6-3. The duo will play St. Petersburg College's Isabela Alvarez Mercante and Rima Yoshida in the final Friday.

The No. 3 doubles team of Sara Ladino and Elena Martinez Prado lost the first set 6-2 but rallied back to win the match, 6-3, 6-4. Ladino and Prado will play Hillsborough Community College's Adeola Greatorex and Catherine Goldman in the final on Friday.

Prado lost at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-2 while Sanchez won the first set at No. 2 singles 6-1, but lost the next two 6-0, 6-4. Lucas fell at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2 while Ladino lost at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1 and Mitlmeier fell 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.

The No. 2 doubles team of Gento and Mitlmeier lost 6-2, 6-1.

The finals will be held on Friday. The teams are vying for spots in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament beginning May 4 in Tyler, Texas.
