Women's tennis team has four in quarterfinals at national tournament

Women's tennis team has four in quarterfinals at national tournament

The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis team had a good day at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Tyler, Texas.

Lucia Lucas Martinez, Helena Jokanovic and Luisa Renovales all picked up wins on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals in singles. The doubles team of Martinez and Paige Noble Lucas also made it to the quarterfinals at No. 3 doubles.

Martinez defeated No. 7 seed Azul Barrios of Barton Community College 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals at No. 4 singles. Martinez will face No. 2 seed Yeva Kramarova of Tyler Junior College who advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Jokanovic continued her strong play, defeating Lewis & Clark's Aubrey Hunter 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals at No. 5 singles. Jokanovic will play No. 3 seed Natalia Michta from Tyler Junior College who advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Renovales beat Central Alabama's Jefflyn Deloach 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. The freshman will play No. 2 seed Hrudaya Shah from Tyler Junior College in a quarterfinal match on Monday.

The duo of Martinez and Lucas defeated East Central Community College's Ivey Bruntlett and Katelyn Wall 6-1, 6-0 and will also play in the quarterfinals on Monday afternoon. The team will face ABAC's Lilia Jerry and Patricia Principal who are the No. 4 seed.

In the consolation brackets, everyone also advanced to finish a perfect day for the Titans.

At No. 1 singles, Emma Sanchez won the first round match 8-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. Sanchez will play No. 2 seed Nicole Dufour who won her consolation match 8-0 after losing in the second round.

Simona Karlsson Hantzis picked up a win 8-1 in the consolation round and advanced to the quarterfinals where she will face Central Alabama's Jane League on Monday.

At No. 3 singles consolation, Gloria Barcaro will play Lewis & Clark's Justine Azarak in the quarterfinals.

In the consolation doubles matches, the No. 1 doubles team of Jokanovic and Karlsson picked up a win 8-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. The duo will play Mesa Community College's Alethea Lacroix and Kylie Williams on Monday afternoon.

In No. 2 doubles, Barcaro and Sanchez picked up a 9-7 victory to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. The duo will play Eastern Arizona's Laura Coulome and Hannah Miller.
