EFSC women's golf team moves to eighth at halfway point of national tournament
The Eastern Florida State College women's golf team had one of the best rounds of the day, moving into eighth place overall at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.
The Titans battled a strong wind to shoot a 313 in the second round as the team shot six strokes better than the first round at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City, Kansas.
"I feel better than yesterday because I thought it was much more difficult today than yesterday, winds were blowing 20-plus all day, hitting the ball was difficult and we hung in there well," Eastern Florida State College women's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "The way we look at it is it is two 36-hole events and now the first 36 holes are done and we have had three good rounds at the course now with the wind blowing in different directions. So we have a good feel for it, we have two rounds left and we are going to take the information we have learned and try to climb the ladder."
Sophomore Savannah Hawthorne shot a 76 and is tied for 18th at 12-over for the tournament. The team started on the back nine and Hawthorne had a couple of birdies early and made the turn at 1-over par. Hawthorne finished the round with five straight pars.
Teammate Sarah Knitter is tied for 11th overall after shooting a 77 on Wednesday. Knitter was also 1-over after nine holes and was four over on the front nine.
Gracie Doke is tied for 36th overall after an 82 while Jasmine Yang and Morela Boyd are tied for 49th overall.
The Titans are third overall with 14 birdies after two rounds. Eastern Florida State College will tee off in the third round Thursday at 9 a.m. at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.
Seminole State College also shot a 313 on Wednesday and remain in the lead at the tournament, six strokes ahead of Daytona State College.
