Women's basketball team defeats St. Petersburg, improves to 4-0 in conference
The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team improved to 4-0 in the Central Conference with a victory Wednesday night at Titan Field House.
The 22nd-ranked Titans improved to 17-3 overall after a 78-58 victory over St. Petersburg.
Eastern Florida State College jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first three minutes and 54 seconds of the game and led 21-7 after the first quarter. St. Petersburg would cut the lead to nine points, 28-19 halfway through the second quarter but a 10-0 run by the Titans helped Eastern Florida State College go into halftime leading 42-26.
The second half slowed down as both teams got into foul trouble, but the Titans remained in control throughout to post the victory.
"St. Pete is a really well-coached team and very physical team, so we knew they were going to play hard and fight as the defending conference champions. The girls really showed their best out there and fought every game but we have a lot left to show," said Eastern Florida State College women's basketball coach MJ Baker who picked up her 90th win as the Titans coach. "We are right where we want to be at this point, we have played some really good teams and have gotten off to a strong start but I feel this is just the beginning for this team."
Shadaria Smith finished with 15 points and had five rebounds and three assists while Kaitlyn Sanders and Rapuluchi Ngorka each scored 14 points in the game. Teammate Leilani Guion had 10 points off the bench on a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor.
Eastern Florida State College will head into the second round of conference games on Monday evening, hosting the Florida State College at Jacksonville at 5:30 p.m. at Titan Field House on the Melbourne campus.
