Titan women's basketball team falls in overtime on the road

Mariah Batz hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime but the Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team could not find a way to pull out the win, falling 71-61 in overtime in a Southern Conference game at Indian River State College Wednesday night.

With the Titans down 55-52 Batz hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game with 24 seconds left in regulation to tie the game. Eastern Florida State had a chance to win it but Caitlyn Smith's runner bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

Eastern Florida State College came out of the locker room firing behind Batz, who had nine of the first 13 points in the game. Teammate Brooklyn Cruz came off the bench and made an impact, scoring 10 points in the second quarter as the Titans found themselves up 12 at the half.

The lead would reach 13 before Indian River State College made a run that eventually saw the game tied up at 42-42.

Things stayed close throughout the fourth quarter but in overtime the Pioneers hit 9 of 13 free throws to pick up the win.

The Titans, who fell to 6-15 overall and 1-3 in the conference, was led by Smith who finished with a career-high 18 points in the game. Cruz finished with 15 points, also a career high and Batz had 12.

Eastern Florida State College will travel to Palm Beach State for a Southern Conference game at 2 p.m. Saturday before returning to Titan Field House Tuesday night, hosting ASA Miami.
