Men's golf team wins Southeast District title, heading back to national tournament

The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team won the NJCAA Southeast District Championship Tuesday evening at Viera East Golf Club.

After a couple of weather delays, the tournament finished the three rounds in the early evening.

The Titans finished the second round with a 292 and then shot a 294 in the third round to capture the tournament with an 874. IT is the 10th district tournament in the past 20 seasons for the Titans.

"That was the goal all along, for the weather to turn the way it did today, timing is everything and we managed to get it in. The whole goal was for everyone to have the same opportunity and play 54 holes. To play 36 felt a little incomplete," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "It has just been a matter of time for this bunch, they are talented. They just had to play up to the talent."

Sophomore Robert Greninger placed third overall, shooting an even par 72 in the final round with one birdie and one bogey. Greninger finished with rounds of 71, 73 and 72 for a 216.

"It was pretty boring, not much excitement really, just hit fairways and greens. I left a lot of putts out there honestly," Greninger said.

Teammate Murphy Allard moved into the top five with a final round of 2-under 70 and was five over for the tournament. The 70 was the best score of the season for Allard.

"I got off to a great start with an eagle on one, then I struggled a bit through four holes but after that I picked it up and I birdied four of the next five holes and really got it going," Allard said. "I just felt like my putts were dropping and finished strong."

Brandon Boncore and Nicholas Miller finished tied for seventh overall and Adam Vermut placed in a tie for 19th place.

John A. Logan placed second overall with Wallace State placing third. Lucas Lasley shot a 67 in the second round of the tournament and won the individual title finishing 4-under for the tournament.

Wallace State's Zackery Coker was 1-under for the tournament after a 69 in the second round.

Vermut, Lasley, Coker, John A. Logan's Andrew Watson, Jefferson State's Trey Rouse and Matthew Hewitt, Wallace State's Davis Aaron, Coastal Alabama's J.P Pennington, Central Alabama's Blayne Armstrong and Andrew's Linus Landahl all made the all-District team.

The Titans advanced to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas from May 16-19.

"I would expect practice will have a little different feel to it, tasting a win is different. We have one more to go, let's get our act together, clean up some loose ends and see what we can do in Kansas," Howell said.
