Men's golf team set to host the Southeast District Tournament

The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team is hosting the NJCAA Southeast District Tournament beginning Monday at Viera East Golf Club.

The Titans come into the tournament ranked fifth in the latest NJCAA Division I men's golf national rankings and have placed second three times in tournaments this spring.

"All that does is prove to us that we can do it, we just have to go out and do it," golfer Nicholas Miller said.

The Titans will be one of 15 teams that will tee off at 7:30 a.m. for the first round of the tournament Monday morning. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and then the final round will be Tuesday morning. The top teams in the district advance to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Kansas.

It will be the first time the district championship will be held at Viera East Golf Club and the second time the Titans have hosted the tournament in the past eight seasons.

"It makes a big difference sleeping in your own bed vs being on the road," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "At the end of the day you still have to go play golf, but you have everything in your favor so there are no excuses, just go do the job."

Freshman Adam Vermut has a win this season and has played in every tournament over the spring. The Titans have won three district titles in the past six seasons and was second last year in Cullman, Alabama.

"It is an advantage, we have five guys going to play and four that are going to be there to support them," golfer Pontus Torgner said. "That is a cool thing, we all get to be around and are part of the team. We all want the best for each other and win the tournament. It will be cool whether you will be playing or watching, but it will be an advantage for us."
