Men's golf team ready to tee off in Southeast District Championship

The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team is in Cullman, Alabama for the NJCAA District 4 Championship beginning Monday.

The Titans come into the tournament the defending district champions and have won six of the past eight district titles. This year's district will be a battle as Central Alabama Community College comes into the postseason No. 2 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek NJCAA Division I Men's Golf Coaches Poll. Eastern Florida State College is No. 5 in the poll and have six players returning from the team that won last year's district title.

"Outside of Texas our district is one of the most competitive districts to be in," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said.

Central Alabama has won all four spring tournaments they have played in while Jefferson State has also been playing well and is receiving votes in the latest polls.

The Titans have finished second in two tournaments and had one of its best finishes at the Barry Buccaneer Invitational, facing some of the top NCAA Division II teams in the country.

The teams will play at the Terri Pines Country Club which hosted the District Tournament back in 2016, which the Titans won.

"The course has a lot of hills, a number of blind shots that you have to play the course a couple of times before those lines become clearer," Howell said. "The guys have not played the course so we need to get acquainted with it rather quickly and ready to go on Monday."

The Titans have a lot of experience as Matt Gauntlett, Drew Lanier, John Houchin and Brandon Boncore all played in the district and national tournament last season.

"Everyone is playing really well and that is really good to see," Howell said. "Timing is everything and I like the fact we seem to be playing really well heading into the postseason."

The tournament begins in Cullman, Alabama Monday with 36 holes and the final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
