Men's golf team in hunt at first tournament of fall
The Eastern Florida State College men's golf team opened the fall season with a couple of solid rounds at the Dan York Memorial Tournament at Cross Creek Golf Course in Cullman, Alabama.
The Titans shot rounds of 278 and 276 on the first day and are one stroke behind Central Alabama Community College for the lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
Sophomore John Houchin is tied for first place in the tournament after shooting rounds of 68 and 66 on the par-72 course. Houchin is tied with Central Alabama CC's Jarod Edwards at 10-under while Titans teammate Brandon Boncore is tied for third at 6-under after rounds of 68 and 70 Monday.
Matt Gauntlett is in fifth place overall after two rounds of 70 put him at 4-under for the tournament.
Drew Lanier is even par and Ryan McMillan shot 72 and 74 and is 2-over for the tournament.
"The team played well. John Houchin has been on a tear as he is 27-under par for his past six rounds including qualifying last week," Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "Well done by Boncore. Solid play by Gauntlett and good comeback by Lanier in the afternoon round. We will need a good effort in the final round as Central Alabama is not going away."
The Titans and Central Alabama CC will battle for the title in the final round Tuesday morning.
