Men's golfer Matt Gauntlett nominated for Arnold Palmer Cup

Eastern Florida State College men's golfer Matt Gauntlett has been nominated as a potential participant in the 2022 Arnold Palmer Cup.

The Palmer Cup will be held July 1-3 this season at Golf Club de Genève in Geneva, Switzerland. The Arnold Palmer Cup is a three-day golf tournament pairing a United States team vs. an International team. The first date of competition is Friday, July 1 and will consist of mixed four-ball matches. The second and third rounds will be contested on July 2 with foursomes in the morning and mixed foursomes in the afternoon. The final day will consist of singles matches.

"It is really cool to be nominated, a lot of really good golfers have played at the Palmer Cup so I am excited to have this opportunity," Gauntlett said. "I really enjoy match play events, it is something I grew up playing a lot in England and to have the opportunity to possibly be able to play in a US vs International even is exciting."

All Palmer Cup participants will be announced on April 19. The first six men's and women's golfers for each side will be selected by the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking. The remaining spots will be based on committee and coaches selections.

Gauntlett was a PING first team All-American last season and has been improving this season with each event as the team gets ready for the postseason.

"I am just trying to build a bit more consistency this year, I struggled a lot in the first semester this year but every tournament I play I am starting to see more improvement, so I am just focused on being ready for the postseason," Gauntlett said.

The sophomore is focused on his game and finishing the season strong but would love the opportunity to play in the Palmer Cup.

"It certainly shows that all of the work that the team puts in is recognized. All of my work and achievements are starting to get recognized which is really satisfying because when you play golf, you practice by yourself a lot and to be recognized for that hard work and to get a chance to play in an event like this would be really cool," Gauntlett said. "It's a golf course that would be interesting to play, right at the Swiss Alps so it would be fantastic event, but to be able to play with the team in an event like that would be really cool."
