Women's basketball team tops Florida Southwestern for 18th straight win

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team won their 18th straight game Wednesday night.

The No. 9 ranked Titans held off Florida Southwestern to pick up the 75-67 victory and improve to 19-3 overall and 14-0 in the Citrus Conference.

Eastern Florida State College got off to a good start as the duo of Amelia Hassett and Jaidyn Koerdt gave the Titans a 23-15 lead after the first quarter. The lead would reach double digits in the second quarter, but Florida Southwestern made a run to cut it to as much as five but Eastern Florida State College went into halftime with a 44-36 lead.

Florida Southwestern would win the third quarter and made the game tight throughout, getting to within a basket with 2:22 left in the third quarter. But the Titans would remain on top heading to the fourth quarter.

The Bucs would make it a two-point game once again on an Ashley Lester 3-pointer but Hassett answered with a 3-pointer of her own and with a few minutes left in the game the Titans went on a run that would ultimately be the difference. Lynn Rieth hit a 3-pointer, the E'Zaria Adams had a basket and then another 3-pointer from Hassett and the Titans were up 69-62.

Hassett recorded her 17th double-double of the season, scoring 27 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in the win. Adams finished with 16 points while Rieth and Koerdt each had nine points.

Lester had 21 points for the Bucs while Makenna Shaffer finished with 14 points.

Eastern Florida State College will be back at Titan Field House Saturday afternoon against St. Petersburg College. The 2 p.m. contest will be shown on WEFS-TV, which is channel 9 or 455 on Spectrum, 68 on DirecTV, 30 on Dish and 68 on AT&T Uverse. Admission to Titan Field House is free.
