Women's basketball team plays in state tournament semifinal tonight
For the first time in 16 years the Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team will play for a spot in the FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 championship game at 8 p.m. in Ocala.
And the Titans did it in grand fashion, hitting a state-tournament record 16 3-pointers and scored a season-high 108 points in a quarterfinal win against Miami-Dade.
Up next a showdown with seventh-ranked Tallahassee Community College who has won four straight including victories against No. 8 Northwest Florida to get into the tournament and an 86-60 win over Daytona State College in the quarterfinals.
"Miami-Dade was a physical game but I think it will help prepare us for this game," Eastern Florida State College women's basketball coach MJ Baker said. "Tallahassee is extremely physical so we just have to brush up on some things and be ready to play."
The Titans were ready to play on Thursday night as sophomore guard Mariah Batz had a career-high 34 points including nine 3-pointers and Region 8 All-State selection Alexandrine Obouh Fegue scored 26 points for the second straight game on Thursday night and has scored at least 20 points 10 times this season.
The Eagles are making their second straight appearance in the state semifinals and come into the game 25-5 on the season.
It will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2012 and will be the final game of the day at the College of Central Florida. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game can be seen live online here.
The winner will play the winner of the Gulf Coast State-Florida Southwestern game at 6 p.m. for the state championship Saturday night in Ocala.
