Women's basketball team opens regular season on road
The regular season is here for the Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team, who will tip off the new season with a trip to Miami-Dade on Wednesday night.
The Titans will open the season as the No. 6 team in the NJCAA Region 8 preseason coaches poll and head coach MJ Baker is excited to get the season started.
"Miami-Dade is one of the tougher facilities to play in and so we will be challenged early which is what we want because that is the only way to grow and see what we are truly capable of doing," Baker said.
Eastern Florida State College is returning five players from last season led by the trio of Mariah Batz, Theodora Odia and Victoria Morales who started almost every game last season. The team has added some talented players in the offseason for Baker's inaugural season with the Titans.
Wednesday night's game is a non-conference game as the Titans have moved to the Suncoast Conference this season with St. Petersburg, Hillsborough Community College and Florida Southwestern.
The Titans will open the season with 11 straight games on the road before hosting ASA Miami on Dec. 15 in the home opener.
The team will be at Indian River State College this weekend for the Indian River Tip-Off Classic, facing Palm Beach State on Friday afternoon and then host Indian River State College Saturday at 2 p.m.
"I just want to see how we are growing and hopefully we are learning from the mistakes we are making because we have faced some growing pains already and I am excited to see how we react and respond to it," Baker said. "If we can learn and correlate all that we have learned in the jamborees and scrimmages into a game situation, we will be fine."
