Softball team earns split at Daytona State College
The Eastern Florida State College softball team earned a split in a doubleheader on the road Tuesday.
The Titans came back to win the first game 7-5 and lost in the second game 2-0 at Daytona State College.
In Game 1, Daytona State College took the lead in the bottom of the first inning but came right back in the top of the second inning as Courtney Stout reached on a bunt single, stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Stout would tie the game, scoring on a passed ball.
But Daytona State College would open things up in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor came in to end the Falcons rally with a strikeout. She struck out three hitters in the fourth inning.
Down 5-1 in the top of the fifth inning, the Titans came storming back. Hedetniemi-Taylor walked, then Trinity Howard and Jacey Boykin both singled to load the bases. Makenzie Fore would walk to score the first run of the inning. A couple of errors led four more runs and Gracie Snell grounded out, scoring Stout and giving the Titans a 7-5 lead.
Hedetniemi-Taylor would work out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth inning and then after a leadoff walk, Hedetniemi-Taylor got the next two hitters out. Then Sam Clark threw out 6 at second base to end the inning.
Hedetniemi-Taylor would have a smooth seventh inning to pick up the victory. Offensively, Stout scored two runs and drove in two runs while Boykin had two hits in the game.
In Game 2, Kat Wisor took the mound for her first collegiate start and it was a good one as the freshman allowed two hits in a complete-game effort.
Unfortunately for Wisor, both drove in runs as Mattie Linhart hit a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Linhart would score on a groundout to open the scoring.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Jael Wilde took a 2-1 pitch over the left-center field wall for a home run to make it 2-0.
The Titans would have two runners on in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but could not tie the game.
Eastern Florida State College is now 4-6 on the season and will be back at Titan Softball Complex Thursday against Santa Fe College who has won four straight and is 8-4 on the season. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. and can be seen live online at the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
