Women's golf team in second place at Lady Titan Invitational
The Eastern Florida State College women's golf team shot a program-best 320 in the first round of the Lady Titan Invitational Sunday afternoon at Suntree Country Club.
The team shot a 333 last season and the team had only beaten that once during practice sessions this fall, but Sunday afternoon in the team's first event of the season they came out and beat it by 13 strokes and are in second place heading into Monday morning's final round. Seminole State leads the event, shooting a 294 in the first round.
"A 320 today is absolutely awesome and one of the better players struggled but the others picked her up. That is what playing as a team is all about," Eastern Florida State College women's golf coach Jamie Howell said.
One of the players who played well Sunday was freshman Gabriella Collura who shot a 78 in her first collegiate event.
"She has done a lot of work, she has had to change her thinking a bit but the talent and ability is there and she still has a long way to go, but for her to see this result so soon, good for her," Howell said.
Sophomore Lauren Holder returns as one of the team leaders from last season and delivered a 78 as well. Teammate Danica Swaggerty shot an 80 and Regan Taylor finished with an 84.
The final round begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at Suntree Country Club. The Lady Titan Invitational is the first of four fall tournaments for the women's golf team.
