Titans' Kareem Brewton to attend University of Memphis
The Eastern Florida State College guard went on a visit Thursday and knew it was the place for him to call home the next two years.
"That atmosphere, the coaching staff, just everything about it," Brewton said Friday from his hotel room. "I just love the coaching staff and how they preach basketball and what we can do here. And the academics, they are serious about academics."
Brewton will be majoring in Sports Management at Memphis and said one of his first stops on campus was to meet with an advisor to make sure he was all set.
His second stop was the basketball court where he watched the team work out and was impressed with the team.
"The players returning were in the gym for hours working. It felt like home because I love to be in the gym all the time, so it was good to see that," Brewton said.
The sophomore from Claxton, Ga. finished his sophomore season at Eastern Florida State College as the Southern Conference Player of the Year averaging 19.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game, leading the Titans to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Game.
And now he will play for one of the most-recognizable coaches in college basketball – Tubby Smith.
"I have dreamed about it, but never really thought I would get a chance to play for a coach like Tubby Smith," Brewton said.
He finishes his Eastern Florida State College career with 1,189 points, starting 55 of the 68 games he played as a Titan. He is also part of a sophomore class that has won 59 games in two seasons.
"Kareem is a truly special player. He is a winner first and foremost," Eastern Florida State College men's basketball coach Jeremy Shulman said. "He makes his team and teammates better around him. He just finds a way to win. Kareem is an amazing kid with a great personality and intense work ethic. It's rare these days to find a player with his abilities and success, yet at the same time his character and humbled demeanor. I believe he is not only a great fit at Memphis, but he will have an outstanding two years for the Tigers!"
