Brewton, Awad Key Titans Past Indian River State
Eastern Florida's men's basketball team went on a 24-6 run over a 7-minute, 24-second span of the second half en route to an 86-70 victory over Indian River State College on Tuesday.
The run keyed by freshmen Kareem Brewton and Austin Awad turned a 53-52 Indian River lead with 12:57 to play to a 76-59 Eastern Florida advantage with 5:33 to play.
Brewton scored 13 points during the run while Awad added six as Eastern Florida ran its FCSAA Southern Conference record to 14-0 and its overall mark to 26-3.
Indian River fell to 7-7 and 16-11.
The Titans, winners of four consecutive conference championships, wrap up the regular season at Miami Dade College in Kendall on Thursday.
Indian River joins Miami Dade, Broward College, Palm Beach State and ASA Miami in this weekend's Southern Conference tournament that will determine which team joins Eastern Florida at the NJAA Region 8/FCSAA Tournament March 2-5 at the College of Central Florida in Ocala.
Awad finished with 24 points, 12 of them coming on four first-half three-pointers. Brewton finished with 20 points.
Eastern Florida struggled early but then built a 42-31 lead before Indian River closed to 44-36 at the half.
The second half was just as frenetic until the Titan run put the game away.
Freshman Jalen Glover contributed 14 points while sophomore B.J. Gladden, one of four Titans honored on Sophomore Night, added 10 points.
Also honored on Tuesday were sophomores Djordje Beronja and Zavier Peart and Class of 2016 member C.J. Jackson.
