Basketball players Aquino, Hassett named Orlando Health Athletes of the Week

A pair of Eastern Florida State College basketball players Owen Aquino and Amelia Hassett each had big weeks for the Titans and are the Orlando Health Student Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 8

Hassett helped the Titans to another couple of wins last week, recording two more double-doubles, helping the Titans to a 2-0 record. Against DME Academy, Hassett scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and then on Saturday against Florida Southwestern she scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds. The Albury New South Wales, Australia native has now recorded nine straight double-doubles and has 11 for the season. 

Hassett is leading Region 8 in both scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 19.5 points and 14.2 rebounds per game. The 14.2 rebounds per game is second-best in the nation. She is also fourth in Region 8 in field goal percentage, shooting 54.5 percent. 

Aquino had his best game this season for the men's basketball team against the Florida State College at Jacksonville on the road. The sophomore scored 24 points in teh first half, leading the Titans back from a 20-point deficit to pick up a win. Aquino finished with a career-best 29 points and 15 rebounds. Then on Saturday the Madrid, Spain native scored 21 points and had eight rebounds against Florida Southwestern.

Aquino is averaging 14.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season. The 8.6 rebounds is tied with teammate Luca Colceag for fourth in Region 8.

The basketball teams will travel to St. Petersburg College on Wednesday for a Citrus College doubleheader.
