Women's volleyball team posts win in AWC Invitational in Arizona

The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team defeated the College of Southern Nevada in straight sets to open the Chapman Automotive AWC Invitational Friday in Yuma, Arizona.

The 18th-ranked Titans, who improved to 4-0 on the season, picked up the win 25-20, 25-15, 25-20 at Arizona Western's gym.

Sofia Kamke got the Titans started, recording an ace and had five straight points as Eastern Florida State College led the rest of the first set. Up 19-12, College of Southern Nevada made things interesting, cutting the lead to 21-20 but the Titans would score the next four points behind the serving of Flavia Romanelli.

The Titans serves began to hit their mark in the second set as the team recorded four aces and cruised to a 25-15 win.

The third set saw the College of Southern Nevada lead early but a big block from Bobbie Schwantz tied things at 5-5 and the two teams traded points until Juliana De Acharan took the ball and turned an 8-8 match into a 15-8 lead. From there the Titans held off one final push from the College of Southern Nevada to pick up their fourth straight win in three sets.

Schwantz finished with seven kills while Kamke had five while Rachele Braccio and Kamke each finished with five aces as the team had 16 in the match. The 16 aces is tied for the most in the past decade.

Eastern Florida State College will play host Arizona Western at 10 p.m. EST in the final match of Day 1. Both teams come into the matchup unbeaten this season.
