Women's volleyball team picks up conference win on the road
The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team defeated the State College of Florida Manatee in a Suncoast Conference match Tuesday night in Sarasota.
The Titans lost the first set 24-26 but bounced back to win the next three, 25-13, 25-23, 25-12 to improve to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
The first set was a back and forth affair throughout with the Titans taking a 23-20 lead on a Fabiola Rivera kill. A Rylie Patrick kill put EFSC on the cusp of a victory but SCF Manatee scored the next three points to pull off the win.
Eastern Florida State College went on a run early to take a 5-2 lead and then a Yuleidy Torres ace and kills by Patrick and Rivera pushed the lead to 11-6. The Titans continued to dominate the second set and three Patrick aces in a row ended the second set 25-13.
Giselle Giraud led the Titans in the third set, recording five of her 18 kills in the set. But with the score tied 23-23, Rosmarie Rivera had a tip kill and then Janleen De Jesus served an ace to pick up the 25-23 win.
The Titans jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the fourth set on a Torres ace and the Titans went on a 6-1 lead to push the lead to 20-9. Eastern Florida State College would finish it behind a couple of kills by Giraud to pick up the win.
The Titans served well on Tuesday night, recording 13 aces in the match. Patrick finished with five while Torres had three, Fabiola Rivera and Angelica Ruiz each had two and Janleen De Jesus had one. The 13 aces is the second most in program history.
Fabiola Rivera finished with 13 kills and 14 digs while Torres had 17 digs in the win.
Eastern Florida State College will host the No. 2 ranked Florida Southwestern State College Thursday night at Titan Field House. The match will begin at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
