The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team improved to 5-1 with a straight sets victory against St. John's River Tuesday night at Titan Field House.
The Titans won the match 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 to improve to 5-1 on the season, the best start under head coach Andrea Rasmussen.
Tuesday night's match was a battle throughout as the two teams traded points early but every time St. John's River would take a lead, Eastern Florida would come up with a big kill to take the momentum back.
In the first set, freshman Delaney Smith had a nice kill and then three straight service points to give the Titans a 24-20 lead. Gunn, also a freshman, finished off the first set with one of her nine kills on the evening.
The second set belonged to the Titans as they took the lead early and never looked back, winning it 25-18.
The third set was the tightest of the night as St. John's River led early but back-to-back kills by Gunn and an ace by Ludmila Bomfim gave the Titans the 9-8 lead. It would remain tight until the end when Malvis Ortiz had two big kill's and Bomfim ended it.
"It really gives the girls some nice momentum going into a tough match Saturday morning with Polk State coming in," Rasmussen said.
Freshman Delaney Smith had a big night for the Titans, finishing with a team-high 10 kills in her first home match.
"She did a really nice job on both sides of the ball," Rasmussen said. "Coming in with the crowd, the pressure of first home game and on TV, being nervous going in she was able to turn it on and tune everything else out."
The Titans will be back at Titan Field House Saturday for two games. The first is against NJCAA Region 8's top team, Polk State at 10 a.m. Then they will host South Florida State College at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
