Former women's soccer player Bunny Shaw named The Guardian Footballer of the Year

Former women's soccer player Bunny Shaw named The Guardian Footballer of the Year

Former Eastern Florida State College women's soccer player Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw has had an incredible year in soccer and was recently named The Guardian Footballer of the Year.

The Guardian, a British national daily newspaper, honors a soccer player who has done something truly remarkable, whether by overcoming adversity, helping others or setting a sporting example by acting with exceptional honesty. Shaw follows Italian Fabio Pisacane in 2016 and Spain's Juan Mata in 2017 as Footballer of the Year winners.

Shaw, who helped the Titans to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament and was an NJCAA First Team All-American in 2016, led the Jamaican national team to their first Women's World Cup and the University of Tennessee women's team to the best season in their history. The 21-year-old scored 19 goals with Jamaica, the most by any player throughout the qualifiers for the World Cup and another 13 goals in 14 games for the Volunteers.

The Spanish Town native has lost four of her seven brothers and while at Eastern Florida State College lost two nephews, one was shot and another electrocuted. Through it all, Shaw excelled on the field and in the classroom and is set to become the first in her family to get a four-year college degree.

Shaw scored 24 goals and had 11 assists in two seasons with the Titans.
