The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team defeated No. 10 Monroe Community College 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
The No. 1-ranked Titans improved to 4-0-1 with the win.
"We were a bit tired today but played much better in the second half," Eastern Florida State College women's soccer coach Jeff Carr said. "The rain came in the second half and I think that helped us a bit."
Goalkeeper Kiera Gibson celebrated her birthday in a big way, making a couple of big saves in the first 20 minutes to keep the game scoreless.
"She played fantastic, saved us because we were asleep early on," Carr said of Gibson who finished with seven saves.
Monroe Community College would score first as Roosa Ariyo scored her 22nd goal of the season which leads the nation.
Seven minutes later the Titans would tie it as Emily Bodi hit a high shot from outside the box that dropped into the back corner of the net. It was Bodi's second goal of the season.
The teams came out for the second half and the rain started to fall. Gibson had another big stop, coming out to stop a 1-on-1 break and in the 61st minute the Titans took the lead.
Aida Illas found Cristina Garriga on the run and Garriga put it past Monroe Community College goalkeeper Meryl Wakefield to give the Titans a 2-1 lead. It was Garriga's third goal of the season.
The Titans will open the Region 8 Conference season on Tuesday night, traveling to Polk State for a 4 p.m. match.
