Women's golf team places sixth in national tournament

It was a historic day for the Eastern Florida State College women's golf team.

The Titans placed sixth overall in their first NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament after finishing with a 317 on Thursday. The 317 was one of the best scores of the day and the best for the Titans this week.

Freshman Morela Boyd also made history, becoming the first Eastern Florida State College player to be named an All-American in women's golf, placing 10th overall to make the second team.

Boyd finished the tournament with her best round of the tournament, shooting a 2-over 74 to finish the tournament 23-over.

On Thursday the Merritt Island native shot 1-over on both the front and back nine as she posted 12 pars to go with three birdies. Boyd finished the tournament with 10 birdies and was 2-over on par 3s in the tournament, which was tied for the best score of anyone in the tournament.

Teammate Jasmine Yang played the final round for Kira Shellman who was under the weather and shot an 8-over 80. The freshman had an eagle on No. 3 as the team played No. 3 6-under par.

Savannah Hawthorne started the round with birdies on three of the first four holes and finished with an 81. She placed 31st overall in the tournament.

Gabrielle Fernandez shot an 82 and Delia Timpy had an 85 in the final round.

Seminole State College shot a 297 in the final round to win their third straight national title in women's golf. The Raiders were the only team to record a round under 300 and did it twice in the tournament. Minori Nagano won the individual title, shooting even par for the tournament.

Daytona State College finished second overall.
