Women's golf team places third at District 5 Championship

The Eastern Florida State College women's golf team placed third at the District 5 Championships at Duran Golf Club.

The Titans shot a final round of 333 to finish third and will wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament May 9-12 at Mayfair Country Club in Sanford.

On Tuesday morning the Titans battled some of the best teams in the nation as well as windy conditions at Duran Golf Club.

Gabrielle Fernandez placed 11th overall at 15-over for the tournament while teammate Morela Boyd was 12th and Jasmine Yang was 13th overall. Delia Timpy placed in a tie for 14th place and Savannah Hawthorne was tied for 16th.

"It was one of the hardest days we have played in a while, the wind blew like it does someties at Duran and it was a struggle from the first tee shot to the final putt," Eastern Florida State College women's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "We just need to clean stuff up, we are obvioulsy better than 333 but you are also as good as your last round so we need to get it out of our system, get rested up and get our top five ready for Mayfair. Country Club."

Seminole State College won the District 5 Championship Tournament, shooting a final round score of 300 to finish the two-day tournament at 590 and win the district title for the fourth straight year. The win sends the defending national champions back to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament.

Seminole State's Minori Nagano finished under par for the second straight round, shooting a 3-under 69 to place first with a 7-under 137 for the tournament.

Daytona State College placed second in the tournament, shooting a 308 in the second round and finished with a 601. The Falcons also qualified for the national tournament with the second-place finish.

Daytona State's Briana Gabe finished the tournament in second place, shooting a 2-over 146.

"I hate putting our fate in someone else's hands but in a short field we finished third against the top two teams in the country all season so hopefully our ranking and our play all season will be recognized and the ladies will be able to go to Sanford," Howell said.
