The Eastern Florida State College softball team lost in nine innings in the semifinals of the FCSAA Division I Softball Championship on Thursday afternoon.
The seventh seeded Titans could not hang onto the lead and lost 6-5 to Chipola College. Eastern Florida State College moves to the B Bracket and will play in an elimination game against Santa Fe College Friday morning at 10 a.m.
The Titans got on the board early as Aracelis Jimenez singled and later scored on Jessica Merk's groundout to give Eastern Florida State College a 1-0 lead. They would add a run in the second inning as Jimenez hit an RBI single that scored Ashley Grieser who had singled.
Up 2-0, Chipola College scored a run in the bottom of the third inning.
It looked as if Chipola would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Indians had runners on second and third with nobody out. But Avery Velazquez got the next three hitters out, striking out two of them to end the threat.
Velazquez would come up with two on in the top of the seventh and launched her eighth home run of the season to make it 5-1.
But Chipola would score four times including a three-run home run by Diana Arcay to tie the game.
It would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth inning when Anyela Gomez singled to score Irene Rabasco with the winning run.
Friday's game will begin at 10 a.m. in Clearwater and fans can watch the game live on the FCSAA Digital Network. The winner of the 10 a.m. game will play at 7 p.m. in the semifinal of the B Bracket. The B championship game will be played Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
