Men's tennis team wins opener against Gustavus Adolphus

The Eastern Florida State College men's tennis team picked up a win in the season opener at Titan Tennis Center on Thursday.

The Titans defeated NCAA Division III Gustavus Adolphus who begins the season ranked No. 17. Eastern Florida State College defeated Gustavus Adolphus 7-2 to go 1-0 on the season.

The No. 1 doubles team of Hugo Car and Lucas Gonzalez got off to a slow start as Gustavus Adolphus' Nick Aney and Marco Siviero took the early 3-2 lead.

But Gonzalez hits a nice crosscourt shot that helps the duo tie things 3-3. They would hold and break to take a 5-4 lead and from there they remained in the lead with Car serving out the 8-6 win.

The No. 3 doubles team of Eavan Attie and Jett Leong also got off to slow start as Gustavus Adolphus looked like they may win the matchup. Down 5-2 the duo broke to close the gap to 5-3. That would spark a run that eventually tied the match 6-6. With the momentum on their side, the team would win the next two and clinch the 8-6 win, giving the Titans two of three doubles points.

In singles, Car would once again be across the court with Aney and the two players split the first two sets with Car winning the first set 6-2, but Aney taking the second 6-4 to force a third set. Car took control and won the No. 1 singles match with the 6-1 win in the third.

Eric Tripathi lost the first set to Indraneel Raut but would turn things around to win the next two sets, 6-4 and 7-5 to win at No. 2 singles.

Jack Dixon won the No. 3 singles match 7-6(5) and 6-2 while Collin Tavares won No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Enric Porcar won at No. 6, 6-1, 6-4.

Eastern Florida State College will travel to Flagler College for a 3 p.m. match on Friday before hosting Atlantis University on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Titan Tennis Center on the Melbourne campus.
