Angelina College defeats Jefferson College

The No. 10 seed Angelina College men’s soccer team made history on Monday, winning their first game at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament Monday at Orlando Health Stadium in Melbourne, Florida.

The Roadrunners defeated No. 6 seed Jefferson 1-0 to improve to 1-0-1 in Pool C. They will await the Monroe College-Jefferson result on Tuesday to see if they advance to the national tournament semifinals.

Angelina College opened the tournament with a scoreless battle with Monroe College that went to penalty kicks.

“It just goes to show the quality of this group, the tremendous character to fall just short and come back and pick up a win,” Angelina men’s soccer coach Nataki Stewart said. “This is a tremendous group, we didn’t have the recovery that we wanted because of the weather.”

Shamour McLean scored the lone goal with less than a minute left in the first half to give Angelina College the lead.

The game went right down to the wire as it looked like Jefferson would tie it in the final minute but Angelina made the stops to win it.

“I tell you, I was looking at the clock and it still said eight minutes and I was like, the clock needs to stop and end the game but that last 30 seconds was wild and hats off to these boys, I am fortunate and blessed that they come out every day and give me everything.”

Jefferson College will play Monroe College at 3 p.m. in the final Pool C game.
