Women's cross country team has good day at Southern Showcase

The Eastern Florida State College women's cross country team finished 28th in the Southern Showcase Friday morning in Huntsville, Alabama.

The Titans, who are ranked 18th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country NJCAA Division I national poll, were led by sophomore Rachel Starr who ran the 5K race in 19 minutes, 16.2 seconds.

Teammate Marlie Gonzalez finished right behind her at 19:27.4 as the freshman posted her best finish of the season. Teammate Amelia Shephard also ran her best time of the season, finishing in 21:41.6. Lauren Deal finished in 22:17.5, Isabella Narvaez ran a 22:33.7 and Sierra Kohler finished in 23:37.1.

"It's exciting to see them getting better and we know we can even be better," Eastern Florida State College women's cross country coach Doug Butler said. "Marlie ran a great race, Amelia ran a huge race posting a personal best. Happy to see that we are moving in the right direction."

Ole Miss won the event with Auburn second, Tulane third, Alabama fourth and Kentucky fifth.

Eastern Florida State College will compete in the FSU Invite on Sept. 29 in Tallahassee.
