Women's volleyball team tops Daytona State in five sets

The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team did something they have never done on Saturday afternoon.

They picked up a win at the L. Gale Lemerand Health Wellness and Community Education Center. The No. 18 ranked Titans defeated No. 19 Daytona State College in five sets, 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 25-16 and 15-7 to improve to 2-2 in the Citrus Conference and 11-6 overall.

The first set was close until a run gave Daytona State College a 14-11 lead, but kills from Dominae Jordan Cherlialix Carmona and Lesmary Raffucci tied things up 14-14. The Titans would take timeout after Daytona State cut the EFSC lead to 20-19. From there the Titans would score five of the final points as Raffucci scored the kill to end the first set.

Up 1-0, the Titans once again found themselves trailing early on in the second set. Sophia Iglesias would serve eight straight points including two aces and the Titans lead was 17-11. It was as much as 22-16 before Daytona State College went on a run of their own. The Falcons would tie the match 23-23 but up one again, Dominae Jordan registered the kill to end the second.

The third set was tight early on but Daytona State College would take a 15-11 lead. The Titans clawed their way back and tied things up 24-24 on an Aliah Snider ace. But the Falcons would score the next two points to win the third set 26-24.

The fourth set was all Daytona State College as the jumped out to a huge lead and won the set 25-16, setting up a fifth set.

Sophomore Mariana Bueno Lopes made sure that Titans would be victorious, taking the ball at 3-2 and served for five straight points, giving EFSC a commanding 9-2 lead. Iglesias had a couple of tip points and Raffucci had a couple of big kills as the Titans picked up the win, 15-7.

Raffucci led the Titans with 13 kills while Jordan had 12 and Emma Cook finished with 11 kills in the match. Iglesias had a season-high 36 assists and five aces.

The Titans are now 3-0 in five-set matches this season.

Eastern Florida State College will travel to Hillsborough Community College on Wednesday night beginning at 6 p.m.
