Women's volleyball team tops Santa Fe on Sophomore Day

The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team defeated Santa Fe College Saturday afternoon in a Suncoast Conference match at Titan Field House.

The Titans improved to 15-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference with the 25-15, 25-19, 17-25, 25-16.

The win officially locks the Titans into the state tournament for the second time in four seasons.

On Saturday, the Titans took a 16-8 lead on a Sofia Kamke kill. The freshman had five kills and a couple of aces in the first set. The Titans continued to hold the lead throughout the first set, taking it 25-15.

The second set saw Santa Fe take an early 8-5 lead, causing a timeout. Out of the timeout the Titans would score three straight points to tie the match 8-8 behind Emma Kiser and Sophia Knowles kills. Down three in the set, the Titans would take the lead behind some strong serving from Rackela Braccio who had seven straight points to go up 20-16. Fabiola Rivera would have two aces to score the final three points as the Titans took a 2-0 lead.

The third set saw the match tied 16-16 but Santa Fe won nine of the final 10 points to win the set 25-17.

The fourth set saw the Titans get back on track as a Gaia Riedmuller ace put the Titans up 8-2. The lead would reach 10 on a Braccio kill as the Titans rolled to a 15-5 lead. But Santa Fe was not done, winning nine of the next 11 points to cut the lead to three. A Delphinia Beams kill would end the match, giving the Titans the victory.

Eastern Florida State College will have a busy week next week with three matches in the next seven days. The Titans will host No. 14 Daytona State College Tuesday night at 6 p.m. before traveling to No. 2 Florida Southwestern on Thursday night. The Titans will travel to No. 13 Hillsborough Community College on Saturday afternoon.
