Volleyball team picks up conference win on the road

Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team went to Polk State College and won for the first time in a decade.

The Titans defeated Polk State College in four sets Saturday afternoon, 25-18, 24-26, 25-13 and 25-11 to improve to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the Suncoast Conference.

After taking the first set 25-18, the second set saw the two teams battle point for point down the stretch as Emma Kiser tied things 24-24 but Polk State College came up with the 26-24 win.

But the Titans would respond in the third set, jumping out to a 10-5 lead and continued to control things, extending the lead to 17-9 on a big block to force Polk State College to call timeout. A Sophia Knowles kill later in the set made it 20-10 and the Titans cruised to a 25-13 win.

The fourth set was all Titans as they jumped out to a commanding 11-3 lead and continued to play well, locking up the win 25-11.

The victory was just the second time in the past 15 meetings that the Titans have defeated Polk State College.

Eastern Florida State College will hit the road on Thursday, traveling to Santa Fe for another road conference match at 6 p.m. The Titans will be back at Titan Field House Saturday afternoon against No. 1 Florida Southwestern at 3 p.m.
