Volleyball team defeats Indian River State in conference match

The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team picked up a Suncoast Conference victory at Titan Field House Thursday night.

The Titans, who improved to 10-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference, defeated Indian River State College in four sets, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-14.

Eastern Florida State College got off to a slow start in the first set but fought back multiple times to make it close. Down 8-4 head coach Melito Eleutiza called timeout and the Titans responded with a 4-0 run as Gaia Riedmuller had an ace to tie the first set 8-8. But Indian River once again went on a run, taking an 18-11 lead but the Titans once again responded, cutting the lead to three, 19-16 on a Paulina Dobreva ace. But that is as close as the Titans would get as Indian River State College wins the first set.

The second set saw the two teams trading points throughout the first part of the set. Tied 20-20, Emma Kiser had a couple of kills and Mariana Saba had an ace as the Titans finished strong to tie the match 1-1.

Indian River State College took a commanding lead early in the third set, leading 10-3 before going on the run of the match. Sophia Knowles had a block and then Sofia Kamke had a couple of kills to force Indian River to take a timeout at 10-7. Down three, the Titans finished off the comeback as Dobreva continued to serve well and the Titans took an 11-10 lead. A Kamke ace tied the match at 16-16 and the run as she would serve six straight points to give the Titans the lead for good and Eastern Florida State College took a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Titans continued to get big plays from all over the court as Eastern Florida State College took a commanding 8-2 lead after a Saba ace. The lead continued as the Titans took a 13-5 lead on a Gaia Riedmuller ace. From there the Titans continued to extend the lead and Kiser served out the set and match.

Eastern Florida State College will travel to Polk State College Saturday for another Suncoast Conference match beginning at 2 p.m.
