Women's volleyball team beats Santa Fe in straight sets

The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team defeated Santa Fe College in straight sets in a Suncoast Conference match Tuesday night.

The Titans handed the Saints their 13th match in a row, winning 25-18, 25-12 and 27-25.

The first set saw a few runs with the Titans leading by as many as five before the Saints came back to tie the match 16-16. Desiree Cruz had a kill to give the Titans a lead and then an ace to take the 18-16 lead. From there, the Titans went on a 7-2 run as Fabiola Rivera hit an ace to finish off the first set.

The second set was all Titans as they grabbed a 20-9 lead behind the duo of Rivera and Giselle Giraud who each had five kills in the set. The Titans finished off the second set with a 25-12 win to take a 2-0 lead.

The Saints took the lead early in the third set and held the lead until Fabiola Rivera had back-to-back aces to tie the match 12-12. From there Yuleidy Torres had three straight aces on a six-point run as Eastern Florida State College took the lead, 19-13. Santa Fe would tie the match 19-19 and held a 23-20 lead before a Giraud kill ended the run. The match was tied 25-25 before the Titans picked up two straight points to pick up the win.

Giraud finished with 15 kills while Fabiola Rivera had 10 and Rosmarie Rivera added five kills. Torres finished with 19 digs to go with her three aces and teammates Maria Cordova had 19 assists and Janleen De Jesus finished with 15 assists in the win.

Eastern Florida State College improved to 7-13 overall and 4-11 in the conference and will wrap up the regular season on the road Thursday against No. 6 Miami-Dade College at 6 p.m.
