Women's volleyball team loses to Indian River State College

The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team lost their final home game of the season Thursday night at Titan Field House on the Melbourne campus.

The Titans won the first set 25-14 but dropped the next three to Indian River State College as the Pioneers won 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22 to pick up their fourth conference win of the season.

After falling behind early in the match, the Titans went on a 6-1 run to take a 9-5 lead. Holding a slim 10-9 lead, Desiree Cruz took the ball and served four straight points to put the Titans in control of the first set. Giselle Giraud and Rosmarie Rivera each had three kills in the first set.

Indian River State College bounced back in the second set, basically leading from the start to even the match up 1-1.

It looked like the Titans would come back in the third set as Janleen DeJesus went on a run with an ace en route to a 6-1 lead. But they couldn't keep it as Indian River State College took an 8-7 lead, causing an Eastern Florida State College timeout. The Pioneers would keep the lead until Jaremis Maldonado had a service ace to tie things at 16-16. But Indian River State scored nine of the final 12 points to take the third set.

The fourth set was close throughout with the two teams trading points but with the match tied 22-22, Indian River would score the final three points to win the match.

Giraud led the Titans with 20 kills and nine digs while Desiree Cruz and Fabiola Rivera each had eight kills. Yuleidy Torres finished with 19 digs.

The loss eliminated Eastern Florida State College from the state tournament. Eastern Florida State College will travel to the Florida State College at Jacksonville Friday for a 1 p.m. match.
