Volleyball team wins on Sophomore Night

The sophomores on the Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team finished their careers with a straight-set victory Wednesday night.

The Titans finished the season with two straight wins, defeating St. Johns River State College 25-23, 25-22 and 26-24 at Titan Field House.

After leading the first set from the beginning, St. Johns River State College jumped out to a four-point lead but a Carley Gregory ace tied the match 18-18. It would stay close until Maria Rentas Correa served out the match with the final three points to head to the third set up 2-0.

The third set was tight throughout but a big Maddy Campbell kill gave the Titans a 25-24 lead and they would close it out when a shot went outside the court.

After the match, Gregory, Erin Arbour, Ariel Letcher, Elisa Pauzer and Mariana Amaral were honored by head coach Andrea Twelvetrees.

"This group has been really special to me, it is a small group but I've invested a lot in them as humans as well as volleyball players and they've invested a lot in me as a human and in the program as a whole," Twelvetrees said. They've done an amazing job contributing to our program."

The sophomore class helped the program get nationally-ranked last season and were a big part in the team's run to the postseason.

Gregory led the attack with 11 kills and had three aces while Letcher finished with six kills. Campbell had seven kills and Nyasia John had six kills in the match.

"I said at the beginning of the season that every year the most important thing is that we grow throughout the season and that we are playing our best volleyball at the end of the year. We have done both of those, and I am so proud of the girls that we have shown the growth, improvement and development from the first match to the last."

The Titans finish the season 5-17.
