Freshmen step up in volleyball team's win

The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team defeated Webber International JV in three sets Friday night at Titan Field House.

Freshman Maddy Campbell came up with a couple big kills early in the first set to keep the lead for the Titans and then served three straight points to give Eastern Florida an early lead and Laura Azevado closed it out for the 25-20 win.

"She is fantastic. We are lucky to have her," Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball coach Andrea Twelvetrees said. "She brings a lot of defense at the net but she is so quick on offense and can put the ball away."

Teammate Emily Mullen served seven straight points to give the Titans an early 9-3 lead. Eastern Florida State College continued the strong serving throughout with sophomore libero Erin Arbour making a nice hustle play to keep a ball alive for the eventual Titans point. Then she served seven straight points to close out the second set 25-14.

Nyasia John and Mariana Amaral had multiple kills in the third set as Mullen hit the game-winning kill as the Titans finished off Webber International JV 25-21.

"Tonight was a chance for the freshmen to step up and shine a bit and we are looking for consistency and what will be our best lineup, our best six and tonight was an opportunity for everyone to show they deserve a spot," Twelvetrees said.

The Titans will jump back into the Mid-Florida Conference schedule next week, hosting the College of Central Florida on Tuesday and then Polk State on Thursday.

"Tonight was a really important win for us because the conference is so tough, you have to show up and play well every single night and we showed last night (vs. Daytona State) that we weren't ready and we looked better tonight," Twelvetrees said. "I think it is all about improving throughout the season and if we can continue to improve over these next four conference matches, that is all I can ask for."

Conference matches begin at 7 p.m. and admission to Titan Field House is free. You can watch the match live on the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
