Women's volleyball team falls in tri-match

The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team went south for a couple of tough matches Saturday afternoon.

The Titans faced Palm Beach State College in the first match of the day and fell in four close sets. The Titans went down 2-0 with 25-21 and 25-20 losses but bounced back in the third set.

The Titans jumped out to an 8-2 lead and remained out front until a reversed call tied the match 16-16. The call seemed to spark the Titans, who won four of the next five points and went on to post the 25-21 win.

Eastern Florida found themselves down 24-20 in the fourth but rattled off three points before Palm Beach clinched the match with the 25-23 win. Ariel Letcher led the way with 16 kills while Celimar Montanez added eight. Laura Acevedo finished with 27 setter assists in the match.

Then the Titans took the court against the No. 1 team in the nation, Miami Dade. And while the Sharks won in three sets, the Titans stayed with them throughout. After falling 25-17, 25-17 the Titans kept the third set close throughout and took a 24-23 lead. But Miami Dade would survive, 26-24.

Sophomore Carley Gregory finished with eight kills and Maddy Campbell added five.

The Titans (1-7) will travel to St. Johns River State College on Friday for a 6 p.m. match.
