Women's tennis has perfect first day at national tournament

Women's tennis has perfect first day at national tournament

The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis team had a perfect first day at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Tyler, Texas.

The Titans went 3-0 in singles as Elena Martinez Prado, Emma Sanchez and Sara Ladino all picked up wins in the round of 32.

Prado, the No. 6 seed at No. 1 singles, defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast Angela Moreno 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16. Prado will play Coastal Alabama Community College's Sophie Smith on Sunday morning. Smith won 6-0, 6-4 in the first round.

Sanchez, the No. 5 seed at No. 2 singles, beat Copiah-Lincoln Community College's Cami Mordiz 6-0, 6-2 to advance. She will play Mississippi Gulf Coast's Danique Vermue Sunday in the round of 16. Vermue won 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.

Ladino blanked Northwest Mississippi Community College's Allie Rawles 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and will play No. 5 seed Ai Katsua from St. Petersburg College.

The No. 1 doubles team of Lucia Lucas and Sanchez won their match against Jacksonville College's Camilla Angioni and Nana Kusumoto 6-0, 6-4. They move into the second round, facing Iowa Central Community College's Ayawavi Vania Dotse and Abide Valentine Talaki who won in three sets.

The three singles players who had a bye in the first round will be in action on Sunday.

No. 5 seed Lucia Lucas will play Jacksonville College's Ozi-Oiza Yakubu in a No. 3 singles match. Yakubu defeated Cheludo Monnayoo in three sets.

No. 4 seed Maria Gento will play USC Sumter's Mary Catherine Cameron at No. 4 singles on Sunday. Cameron won her first round match in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

No. 5 seed Thais Mitlmeier will open at No. 6 singles against Meridian Community College's Lilly Hollingsworth who won 6-1, 6-1.

The No. 2 doubles team of Gento and Mitlmeier is the No. 5 seed and will play host Collin College's Alyssa Glasgow and Jinsol Yang who won 6-0, 6-1.

The No. 3 doubles team Prado and Ladino are the No. 2 seed and will play Coastal Alabama Community College's Lena Spears and Hannah Vosteen in the round of 16. Spears and Vosteen won their first match, 6-4, 6-4.
